Hatta–Munay–Khor Kalba (Route 11) Because of its proximity to the Hajar Mountains, Hatta is the gateway to a number of spectacular routes featured in this guide. Unusually, this particular route takes you from Hatta, through the mountains, to the Gulf of Oman. It incorporates old forts and watch-towers, scenic wadis and oases, and a hot-water spring at Ain Al Qamour.

With the development of new tarmac roads, the route has changed tremendously since the first edition of this guide appeared and more tarred roads were being constructed while this edition was being updated. It’s therefore probable that more changes will affect the route. If this happens, it’s advisable to leave the tar whenever possible and explore the many tracks leading into the wadis and up the mountains.

Of course, this applies to other routes as well – but this is all part of the excitement of off-road driving and you can use these routes as a basis for many interesting detours. Having a GPS will certainly help you with your navigation and rejoining the routes described in this guide.
